This device demonstrates the mechanical action of the earth's magnetic field on an electric circuit with the mobile part made of a vertical copper wire through which ascending or descending current may flow.

Description: Two copper vases upon a mahogany support are inserted in the middle on boxwood bases which are integral to a vertical brass column. The two vases can be filled with acidulated water and are placed one upon the other: the upper one is smaller. The brass column, which is electrically connected with a rheofore of the base and which is insulated from the larger copper vase, terminates with a brass capsule, generally containing mercury, and on its bottom is a small glass cup upon which the metal point of the mobile conductor is positioned. The mobile conductor consists of a small lightweight horizontal wooden rod which can rotate on a central metal point and which has copper wire wrapped around its extremities, the points of which fall vertically into the acidulated water of the two containers. Both wires can be pulled from the small rod. The electric circuit closes on a second rheofore of the base linked to the lower vase by means of a small brass spring.

Function: Attaching the rheofores to a pile, the electrical current passes along the brass column and in turn into the acidulated water of the upper container, therefore through the two parallel segments of the copper wire until finally meeting in the lower container and then returning to the pile. By removing one of the two copper wires from the small rod and replacing it with an appropriate counterweight, the system (supplied) starts to rotate around the brass column, slowly moving along a plane which is perpendicular to the magnetic meridian. According to the direction of the current (ascending or descending) along the segment of the vertical wire of the circuit, the system moves to the west or to the east of the column. Vice versa, if the wires are kept in the small rod (as shown in the illustration), the system supplied remains still for the balance of the pairs.
