This simple device is one of those instruments capable of producing brilliant effects of light in the dark caused by the electric spark. Their creation had developed since the late 18th century in the wake of the transformation of electric phenomena into an exhibition: this raised not only the curiosity and the interest of the public but also led to the production of devices for "recreational science".
Questo semplice apparato si annovera tra quelli idonei a produrre nell'oscurità brillanti effetti di luce prodotti dalla scintilla elettrica. La loro produzione si sviluppò a partire dal tardo XVIII secolo, sulla scia della spettacolarizzazione dei fenomeni elettrici che alimentò la curiosità e l'interesse del pubblico, incrementando ad un tempo la produzione degli apparati della "recreational science".
   
Description: This device consists of a long glass tube to which a series of tin foil leaves are attached. They are rhomb-shaped and placed in a helical form one after another along the interior of the tube. The extremities of the tube are fitted into two brass armatures, which are connected with a hook and a conductor, and their purpose is to make one of the two external rhombs of the helix communicate with the electric source and the other with the ground.
Descrizione: l'apparato è costituito da un tubo di vetro lungo la cui parete interna sono incollate una serie di fogliette di stagnola, tagliate a forma romboidale e disposte ad elica a breve distanza l'una dall'altra, lungo tutto il tubo. Le estremità del tubo sono incassate in due armature d'ottone, connesse con un uncino e un conduttore, destinate a fare comunicare le losanghe estreme dell'elica, l'una con la sorgente elettrica, l'altra con la terra.
   
Function: By connecting the tube (through a conductor with a hook) with an electrostatic machine, sparks are produced simultaneously along the helix. A brilliant beam of light, particularly fascinating in the dark, is created. The experience also demonstrates the high speed at which the electric discharge travels.
Funzionamento: collegando il tubo (mediante il conduttore ad uncino) con una macchina elettrostatica, scoccano simultaneamente, lungo l'elica, delle scintille che producono una brillante striscia luminosa, particolarmente suggestiva se si opera al buio. L'esperienza mostra anche la grande rapidità con cui si propaga la scarica elettrica.
