Nobili describes this item as follows: «Small container having two vertical wires, which are entirely insulated except for their points. The two points are covered with mercury by pouring a sufficient amount of this substance into the small container. Mercury is also placed into the two cups, from which the two vertical wires protrude. The usual voltaic circuit is created and the pole of a small magnet is placed in the middle of the container. Mercury turns towards the other direction above the two wires (Davy). Even when there is no magnet, if mercury is extremely pure and if it barely covers the points of the two wires, the Earth's magnetism is sufficient to create these rotations, even though they are much slower (Nobili). Extremely intense currents produce another effect: they lift mercury in the shape of a cone above the points (Davy). (This can be achieved distinctly with only one Pepys' element having a six square feet surface (Nobili)» [Nobili 1834].
Ecco come il Nobili descrive questo pezzo: «Vaschetta con due fili verticali, isolati da per tutto fuorchè nelle loro punte. Si coprono le due punte di mercurio versandone la dose conveniente dentro la vaschetta. Si riempiono dello stesso metallo le due piccole coppe, in cui terminano al di fuori i due fili verticali. Si compie al solito il circuito voltiano. Si presenta il polo di una piccola calamita al centro della vaschetta. Il mercurio gira da contraria parte al di sopra delle punte dei due fili (Davy). Questi giri, quantunque molto più debolmente, han luogo anche senza l'ajuto della calamita, ogni qual volta il mercurio della vaschetta sia ben puro e tale che copra appena le punte dei due fili. In allora il fenomeno è prodotto dal magnetismo terrestre (Nobili). Le correnti molto energiche producono un altro effetto: sollevano il mercurio in forma di cono al di sopra delle punte (Davy). (Tali prominenze si ottengono distintamente con un solo elemento alla Pepys di sei piedi quadrati di superficie (Nobili) )» [Nobili 1834]
