This catadioptric telescope, which is characterized by an azimuth mounting and by an unusual design, is based on the principle of functioning invented in 1663 by the Scottish mathematician and astronomer James Gregory (1638-1675). This was the first telescope to combine lenses and mirrors and it inspired Newton in the creation of his famous telescope. The instrument was probably made in Italy and it is peculiar because it has a quadrant clinometer, a cardanic suspension compass, and because the mechanism controlling the movement of the secondary mirror is inserted inside the tube of the telescope.

Description: The brass telescope is fixed onto a black-painted wood tripod: it can be oriented and fixed in any direction with a turn of a screw. The reflecting tube is mounted on a short, rectangular, U-shaped brass frame, which is fixed to the column through a joint that allows it to be inclined. The inclination is micrometrically adjusted manually with a wormscrew that meshes in a semicircular gear. The determination of the zenith angle signalling the height of a star is carried out through a quadrant clinometer, which is fixed under the frame that supports the optical tube. The clinometer graduation from 0° to 90° engraved on its circular edge and it also has a mobile index that rotates around the top of the quadrant. At the extremity of the mobile index is a vernier that permits the accurate fractional reading of the scale (1/10°). The instrument is equipped with a cardanic suspension compass, which is fixed under the base that supports the optical tube. The compass has a metal base in which the four cardinal wind directions are engraved: M=maestrale (northwest wind), T=tramontana (north wind), P=ponente (west wind) and L=levante (east wind). In the optical tube are a fixed primary metal mirrior, whose curve is concave-paraboloidal (Ø 55 mm), and is placed at the bottom of the tube and has a hole in the centre, and also a secondary mobile mirror, which is smaller (Ø 15 mm), crafted with a slight is concave-ellipsoidal curve.

Function: The rays coming from a star are reflected from the primary mirror to the secondary mirror through the manual rotation of a screw that controls a rack and pinion system inside the tube. The rays are then reflected from the secondary mirror to the eyepiece which is fitted with a screw in the hole of the primary mirror.
