This instrument was invented by the English physicist Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) who had been a professor of experimental physics at King's College in London since 1834. Wheatstone mentioned the instrument for the first time in 1825 in a letter to the English astronomer John Herschel and, in the following year, in another letter to the Danish Physicist Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851). The description of the instrument appeared in 1827 in the Quarterly Journal of Science, Literature and the Arts of London and in the Poggendorf's Annalen der Physik, in Germany. According to his declared intentions his "little philosophical instrument" had to "explain the real theory of undulatory motion and to establish a closer relation between sound and light" through a series of experiments. His creation was inspired by some similar experiments carried out by the English physicist Thomas Young (1773-1829), which were published in the "Transazioni filosofiche" (Philosophical Transactions) in 1800. Wheatstone called the instrument "Kaleidophone or Phonic Kaleidoscope" because it shared "the property of creating beautiful forms", as with Brewster's Kaleidoscope, in traces of light produced by vibrating rods.

Description: A thick rectangular oak base, which is ballasted in the lower part by two lead sheets to increase its stability and which is provided with two feet and a brass levelling screw, has ten steel rods on its surface. The rods are arranged into two symmetrical lines along the longer side of the base and rigidly fixed to one end with circular brass disks. The bars have more or less the same length and the same rectangular section (except for one with a square section), and on each disk there are engravings of the proportion between two entire simple numbers which refer to the dimensions of the two section sides of the bar. They are marked as follows: 1:1; 2:5;1:3; 2:3; 1.2; 3:4; 3:5; 4:5; 7:8; 5:6. Each end of the bars is crafted in the form of a lucid pearl and it is, therefore, able to reflect any source of light that may hit it.

Function: By making the pearl of the rod oscillate and by illuminating it properly, one notices typical curves of light called "Lissajous' shapes" as a result of the persistence of vision in the retina. For example, if the proportion of the two sides of the section is 1:1, that is, if the section is squared, the trajectories will appear in a sequence, in one direction and then in another: from a straight line, to an oblique line, and then to a circle. The circle will then form into an oblique ellipse (with an opposite inclination with respect to the first one) and so on. Moreover, as the number of vibrations is proportional to the dimension of the side of the section, there will also be a combination of vibratory motions. Each rod, therefore, if elicited to vibrate transversally, describes a set of typical curves, according to the proportions of the frequencies of the different motions.
