This seismograph was designed by the scientist Michele Stefano De Rossi of Rome in 1875. Surviving documents confirm that the instrument was built in Rome by the famous mechanician Ermanno Brassart [1]. On the explicit request made by Serpieri to De Rossi (April 7, 1878) the instrument, which cost £ 400, came to Urbino on April 7, 1878, it was equipped with two iron shelves upon which it could be placed, at an additional cost of £ 12 for twelve paper rolls, and with very thin thread of natural silk. This instrument is still in a good state of preservation but lacks the mechanical part related to the clockwork-movement, the metal anchors and a sliding cylinder.

Description: It consists of a detector and a recorder. The recorder is equipped with a mechanical clock that is able to set into motion a strip of paper that slides by pressure between two cylinders; it also comprehends four pairs of electro-magnets that are parallel to and electrically connected with the terminal of a pile. A metal anchor, with one cog, is mounted on each pair, and it is placed above the strip of paper. The detector consists of a pendulum the motion of which is activated by the first impulse of an earthquake, is amplified through four loose silk threads, which stretch from one point of the pendulum and reach four fixed points corresponding to the four cardinal points. In the middle of the threads there are four metal needles that are electrically connected with the other pole of the pile and that are suspended over four little cups of mercury. These are placed at the level of the four fixed points and are linked, through electrical wires, to the four pairs of electromagnets.

Function: The recording of an earthquake comes about due to the fact that any small horizontal semioscillation of the pendulum corresponds to a noticeable downward movement of the metal needle which, falling into the underlying mercury, closes the electric circuit so that the electromagnets attract the corresponding anchor downwards, perforating the paper. The instrument allowed not only for the distinction of signals for each semioscillation of the pendulum in the shape of separate dots but also for the determination of the direction of the first undulatory impulse of the earhquake. For that reason De Rossi called the instrument “protoseismograph”. This, however, did not permit to determine either the duration or the intensity of the earthquake. The device was honourably displayed at the Exposition of Electricity in Paris in 1882.
