This instrument is based on the hygroscopic properties of several organic substances - such as hair, animal membranes, whale bone, etc.- to absorb humidity, thereby altering weight and size (for example, whale bone and hair become longer by absorbing humidity and become shorter in dry environments). |
Questo strumento si fonda sulle proprietà igroscopiche di alcune sostanze organiche - quali ad esempio i capelli, le membrane animali, l'osso di balena ecc.- di assorbire sensibilmente l'umidità dell'aria, alterando così il peso e le proprie dimensioni (ad esempio, l'osso di balena e il capello si allungano assorbendo l'umidità e si accorciano in ambienti secchi). |

Description: The instrument is in the form of a small hand-painted statue representing a Turk. The head of the statue is attached to a circular iron frame painted in a gold coloured dust, and it is free to move through animal intestines wrapped around the iron frame. The intestines shrink or expand according to air humidity, thus making the puppet’s head rotate. |
Descrizione: Lo strumento è una statuina pitturata a mano, raffigurante un turco. Su un telaio circolare in ferro pitturato con porpora dorata è sospesa e libera di ruotare, per mezzo di un budello animale attorcigliato, la testa della statuetta. A secondo dell'umidità dell'aria, il budello si contrae o si allenta facendo ruotare la testa del pupazzo. |

Function: Although this simple device does not provide measurements of quantity, it still gives general information: it has been proven that the puppet’s head rotates to the left when air is damp and to the right when it is dry. |
Funzionamento: pur non permettendo misure quantitative, questo semplice dispositivo riesce tuttora a dare un'informazione di massima: si è verificato che la testa del pupazzo ruota verso la sua sinistra quando l'aria è umida e verso la sua destra quando è più secca. |
